Many schools are using Steven Covey's Seven Habits of Effective Leadership to guide their mission which is right on point. However, Covey's most recent book, TRUST AND INSPIRE (2022) is just as compelling across professional disciplines. I think he outlines a refreshing tone of leadership for us all especially during a time such as this.
1. Covey calls on leaders to demonstrate critical workplace values– humility, courage, authenticity, vulnerability and empathy – to create and maintain a sense of mission, purpose and stamina.
2. He offers an alternative to command-and-control leadership: Trust & Inspire. Covey explains how this approach aligns with current employee cultures and fulfills the demanding need for adaptive leadership, management and supervision.
3. Trust and inspire” leaders, meanwhile, also prioritize results, but they achieve them by inspiring their employees’ intellect, innovation and developing their potential. We should put ACES in their PLACES, get somewhere, encourage them to measure the targeted outcomes/impact and provide support where needed.
4. The result of trust and inspire is a solid reminder that if leaders continue prioritizing “getting results” over building relationships, they’ll do neither. You know, I love this one!
